In the 19th century, these dogs were originally bred for stability and strength. These protective and friendly canines served as guardians, personal protectors and playing companions for children. The first breed club appeared in 1896 in Germany to pursue the looks and qualities of this breed. The AKC recognized this breed in 1904. The breed standard changed several times since the time of the breed foundation, but the modern breed is only slightly different from the original. These dogs are medium-sized, shorthair, with tight-fitting coat. This breed is playful and high-spirited.

These dogs have a short coat that needs a regular wipe-down and an occasional bath. The only acceptable body color in this breed is fawn. White markings on the muzzle, chest, belly, feet, neck, and inner legs are permitted. The face should be a black mask. These dogs are muscular, short-coated, square-headed canines, characterized by the slightly pushed in top of the muzzle, and a broad nose. Males stand 22.5-25 inches at the withers and weigh about 70 pounds. Females are slightly smaller, measuring 21-23.5 inches and weighing about 60 pounds.
