Boxer Dog Name

There are several theories about how the Boxer Dog name originated. Most people believe that it originated from the habit of these dogs to “box” with their front paws when fighting and playing. In fact, this breed appeared in Germany in the 19th century, so it’s unlikely that one of the most popular German dogs has an anglicized name.

Other theories concerning the Boxer Dog name derive the word “boxer” from the Bavarian word meaning “short trousers” or “underwear.” According to another theory, the name of the breed comes from the name of its ancestor – the Brabanter or Bullenbeisser also known as Boxl. The Boxer is a smaller version of that large and powerful dog, so it could be called by an endearing term.

There is also a theory according to which the Boxer Dog name was derived from the group of breeds named “Bierboxers.” This group consisted of fighting breeds that were bred down from the Bullenbeisser and other large pit fighting dogs. Such dogs were taken to the Munich beergarten (an open-air restaurant) for showing purposes and sometimes for fighting. One more theory claims that Boxer is a popular name for the first specimens of the new breed.

The Boxer is a relatively new breed, but due to its working abilities and intelligence it quickly gained popularity and became one of the ten most popular dog breeds in the USA and Europe. Boxers make friendly and affectionate companions for families with children and for the elderly. Their affectionate nature and ability to make independent decisions make them excellent therapy dogs, guide dogs, service dogs, as well as military and police dogs. In rural areas, Boxers are sometimes used for herding cattle and pulling carts. Though loyal and friendly, these dogs are not for any household. Novice owners will be happy with Boxers only if they will be able to provide the dog with enough mental and physical activity and devote much time and attention to the pet. Prior to obtaining a dog of this breed, learn much about it. There are many books, magazines, and websites where you can find essential information from the history of the breed to some ideas on choosing a Boxer Dog name.
